Selfish Poem by Naomi Mith

Selfish

Rating: 4.5

Dried tears on my cheek
My eyelashes are damp
My heart is too weak

I can't stand the pain
Though it's my punishment to bear
I can't stand the thought
But my mind is already there

Were you mine to take?
Were you mine to break?
Were you mine to love?
Were you all of the above?

You would laugh if you saw me crying right now
I'm the one who broke our trustful vow

I'm the one who hurt you
I'm the one who left
Yet here I am alone, an emotional mess

You could say that I'm selfish, horrible, and naive
You could say that I'm evil and left you with much to grieve

You could say I did everything to tear us apart
But in all honesty
No one else but you is the owner of my heart.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
The selfish, possessive feelings you have for an ex; even though you're the one that hurt them.
COMMENTS OF THE POEM

This is your first poem that I have read on this site, and I must say I liked it a lot. Thanks for the 'Poets Notes'- I liked the frank confession. Although the title of the poem is apt and the lines of the poem suggest that the emotions emanate from some selfish activities of the poet in the past with regard to her lover, yet it appears to me that the one who could see her own mistakes that led her to this 'emotional mess', and write these beautiful lines to express her realization, couldn't be all too selfish in real life. However, you are the best judge of your actions, but as a poem, I can say that your expression is beautiful. Your biography is one of the shortest I've read so far, yet not the least said.
