Shadows Poem by Adam Holmes

Shadows

Rating: 5.0

Beg for breath says shadowed man
No, let the dice roll, fall any which way
I fear not death, for all I know, today’s the day
The boy in the corner stopped crying
Now he stands up brave, the night needs no light

Televangelist says he knows Jesus
Send him your money, he will lead the way
Drop to my knees, begin to pray
Salvation is expensive and I’m out of cigarettes
I turn off the TV and drive to the store.

The elderly man lies on his hospital bed
His past outlived his memory
And a shadow stands in the corner
He has seen it before but forgot what it said
Takes a breathe
Forgets to beg
