She Was Not Invited To Dine - Poem by Richard Elwes

Tonight again-
Tonight I saw you as you peered
Over the shoulder of the clucking hen,
Who faced me at the table, saw that
you heard
The trickle of banality
That issued from her, listening
With infamous pretended gravity,
Wickedly solemn, to her chattering,
There was a moment then to gaze
On you, who fill the days
With visions and the nights with dreams.
