Sleep Poem by Rajendran Muthiah

Sleep

Rating: 5.0

The unlawful annex sleep
by taking drugs or drinks.
Royal wines inundate the bellies
of politicians to sink them into sleep.
Thinking students, and the inspired writers
swallow pills for to be swept
into the realm of billowy sleep.
The culprits with some conscience
offer gifts to the poor and drift off.

But this eluding sleep visits me often
just after eating a square meal
or while reading books of knowledge
or before getting tickets from the conductor.;
while cutting my hair in a salon
or getting the cavities in my teeth filled;
sitting on a chair and teaching my students
sends me into sound sleep,
thanks to my undisturbing boys;
listening to a lecture,
loaded with vocabulary and ideas,
leaves me to lie on the coast of sleep.

Sometimes I think and smile myself
what will happen
if I man the borders of our nation
or sent to hunt down Sandalwood Veerappan;
stand guard to a beauty
or asked to do duty in an operation theatre;
drive a bus on the road to Simla
or ordained to go in a spacecraft?

Hypnotic therapy is not a need
to lull this breed into sleep.
