Slit Girl Poem by Kelly Boutin

Slit Girl

Jagged rocks on the beach
found her when she fell asleep
blood drips into the sea
can waves stop you when you bleed?
the slit girl slips underneath
maybe there she'll find some peace...
her eyes turn into slits
as she looks at her wrists
and remembers...all of it

She was slit like eyes that couldn't see
because every shadow
crossed her dreams
and slitted rays
of sunbeams
found their way
underneath
into the cracks of her world
cracking the ice where she stood
breaking down the slit girl.

Holding on
to icebergs
saying someday
they'll help her
as the wind burns her shadow
and her reflection fades
haunting the echoes
of a dream never made
the slit girl cracks
and slips underneath.

Didn't I say I would die for you?
Isn't freedom a reason to die for?
What does the sun shine for?
What do birds fly for?
Migrate to another iceberg
and cling to your Titanic,
the slit girl cracks.
