Sonata 44 Poem by Jose 'Pepe' Carrascal

Sonata 44

If someone would ask me why I keep you,
I certainly would have nothing to say,
It is something I cannot easily put into words
Nor any word is adequate to speak of it all.

But if I would be compelled to give a reply
I’d simply put it this way-

It is not because it is you who I wanted
Nor it is you I dreamed to have
Because I never asked for you to arrive
But it is you who came to my life.

Perhaps, I could say nothing more
Not in the sense that you matter less,
But simply because I know for certain
That it is you who I love and that is all.

If in that instance when I searched for a star
And I found nothing in the night sky
It is not because my heart is filled with gloom
Rather, my eyes are blinded with so much light.

Yes, their radiance appear to be lacking
And you simply outshone them all.
It is to your luster that I fell in love with
And therefore, I go blinded to care figuring out the rest.

And so if someone would ask why I keep you,
I certainly have nothing much to say
For other than the attempts I made through my poems,
It is only my heart that can speak of it truly and more.
