Song: If Love Can't Keep Us Together

If love can't keep us together,
Why does it rope us apart?
As if we're not jointly tethered,
To the great hope deep in our heart.

Svelte in your tight racing leathers,
You clutched my machine at it's spark.
Your touch was as light as a feather.
How you drove through chicanes was a lark.

If love can't keep us together,
Why does it drive us apart?
Like an ill wind or a wild zephyr,
When down steep hills we speed like a dart.

I just can't go on from a place that's beyond,
All reason that's a space I cannot know.
I just can't go on with the grace of a bond,
In a race to an end far below.

If love can't keep us together,
Why does it rip us apart?
We can't travel like this forever,
If it ain't on no new map or chart.

If love can't keep us together,
Why does it tear us apart?
A cook whose menu endeavors,
To highlight your sweetness from tart.

If love can't keep us together,
Why do we just fall apart?
Through tempest and drear stormy weather,
When it upends the whole horse and cart.

I just can't go on like an old Don Juan,
Like Napoleon from Moscow.
I just can't go on when your love has gone,
Lest I die cold and fond in the snow.

If love can't keep us together,
Why does it shove us apart?
I can't pull more strings or more levers,
I'm just not that clever or smart.

If love can't keep us together,
Then why does it break us apart?
When we say this will happen - never,
When a pulse halts what makes it jumpstart?

If love can't keep us together,
Why does it cleave us apart?
When all that unites us is severed;
That delights us like iconoclastic art.

I just can't go on like a sad dying swan,
Or a fawn in a staged ballet show.
I just can't go on in a long marathon,
When so wan and set upon, blow by blow.
