Sonnet # 146 Poem by John A. Hancock

Sonnet # 146

April's dismal rain betrays
Nature's hint that spring arrived
Dampness playing host to chilly air
Till the warming sun complies
The river bares all that winter fell'd
Holding tightly in its grasp
Fefuse rising waters comendear'd
Coursing down its swollen path
Water fowl hang close to shore
Riding out the river's rage
Anger'd by melting snow and rain
Swiftly flowing thru a twisted maze
Soft you now harsh wind and rain
from thy fury spring nature begs thee to abstain
