Seated on a bench in front of my hall
I heard a clamor and assault,
It sounded like wings
-or I don't know what-
So I turned at these sounds
They all en-walled by a foliaged green vault.
Birds flew from trees, from arbors, from shrubs
A tintinnabulation of zeal,
I saw them fly high-
up through the sky-
Then down, doing cartwheels
As though to avoid heaven's wheels.
I wondered what gave them this fit
Where simultaneously they all took wing,
What caused them to fly up through
the night's sky,
No longer to perch-
no longer to sing-
but rather to ascend, then sky-dive.
And then I solved this whodunit
A berry by a bird was dropped,
It made such a sound (as it fell to the ground)
Hitting other leaves and branches
and what not.
The sounds that berry made as it plummeted
towards the ground-
making clamorous sounds to all,
Startled each from their tree-shelves-
every bird for herself-
Each feeling unsafe
afraid that they'd each be mauled.
A berry was the seed-
pushed by gravity-
But soon the birds once again settled down,
They perched and they cooed-
but little did they know-
They had flown downwards-
so now were on riskier lower grounds.
