Every time my naughty grandson
Who is just about one
Goes cranky, throws a tantrum
I have noticed
A peek into the open soothes him
He likes the trees
Tall verdant maples and pines
Against the dark blue sky
The glisten of their leaves
Wandering lonely clouds
And the breeze on his indignant cheeks
Yet, often all these tranquilizers fail
When there is a little savior at the door
A small spider who does the trick
Whom we greet every morn
"Spider Bhai! Good Morning! "
We have let our guest live
And rule his almost invisible net in peace
Every time my finger pokes
He retreats deep into the web
The kid then beams with a smile
Lowering himself from my shoulder
He then tries his own finger on the spider
Eyes shine in joy, wet cheeks dry
As the arachnid plays hide and seek
A baby cackle then breaks
Is it not strange
That when arachnophobia plagues
Almost every naked ape
That walks the earth calling itself human
A child is enamored by a domestic weaver!
Where does their communion originate?
Aren't we created to live in peace
Without fear, in love and ease?
And then do we err down the drain
That we call growing
To fear and hate all other beings?
May our babies inherit
A world where no phobias exist
It is in them to make that dream
And let us teach them sing
"Spider Bhai! Good Morning! "
Note: "Bhai" in Hindi means brother.
A very... very lovely poem.....! The intimate tone, the casual treatment of the subject and the beautiful message at the end makes it very special..... But somehow my son was quite scared of spiders when he was a baby...... may be a phobia unwittingly induced in him by his mother!
A poem with a great message. A small every day incident can lead to big thoughts. Yes, we must teach our children to love n respect every living creature. An atmosphere free of phobias is the stepping stone to a peaceful world. A thought-provoking write.
I believe that we are born, basically as blank slates, with no predispositions. Our fear of spiders, distrust and hatred of those of different nationalities, colors, and even our political leanings and myriad other mindsets are instilled and indoctrinated by our parents. Parents are important to the survival of our planet. We must teach them to teach their children well. Peace Bhai Madathil

My goodness- - - this is a very persuasive poem. I know because the only spider I can tolerate is the great daddy-long-legs. And with these words you have me rethinking my stand [swat] on the subject. But hoever much you have made me think more kindly toward the arachnid class, I must reserve the right to run screaming for a shotgun whenever I see a black widow spider.... lovely poem and it deserves a 10
