Strange New Lands Confront With New Challenges Poem by Terence George Craddock

Strange New Lands Confront With New Challenges

Rating: 5.0

the statement is solid valid
English immigrant settlers
back in early colonial days

seemed to favour a common
type of construction architecture
people use what is accessible close

first in the days of horse and cart
in many places people settled
there was an element of clearing

the land if densely forested
therefore trees must be cut down
for agriculture to grow food

saw mills go with early colonization
in many places spread across NZ
but the east coast south island NZ

was early settled canterbury plains
largely treeless in the Christchurch
port Lyttleton a past volcanic area

walls were often fast constructed
with a local source volcanic stone
sailing down the coast to Oamaru

many historic buildings beautiful
were constructed using Oamaru Stone
building styles are cultural traditional

reflecting acquired skills
techniques the craftsmen
local work force knows

builders build within the box
building as builders are trained to do
customers flock to purchase custom

familiar products time proven tried and true
strange new lands confront with new challenges
people are comforted with familiar they knew
