String Of Pearls Poem by Suzanne Hayasaki

String Of Pearls

Speak to me of this sound
That follows you in the wind
That sings to you in your sleep
That fills your ears in your dreams.

Is it bright and shiny like diamonds?
No, it's nothing so rigid and brittle.
Is it yellow and glowing like gold?
No it is nothing so heavy or bold.

It is simple and plain
Yet it shines with a luster
Colorless yet rich
With opalescent undertones.

I hear a sound as smooth as silk
As subtle as ivory against white
As harmonious as pastels
As rich as caramel.

Then hum it for me.
Serenade me in the moonlight.
Dance with me on this verandah
Make my skirt swing

With a sound as elegant
As a simple string of pearls.
