Sanctity of life
is a notion
simultaneously
sturdy and fragile.
It is sturdy
because it
cannot be erased
entirely from
human consciousness
and has withstood
numerous ferocious
challenges.
It is fragile
because it is
all too easily
set aside,
rationalized away,
or rejected.
