Summer In January Poem by Sherylyn Knighten

Summer In January

Time stops
For one brief instant
While you're sitting with your eyes closed
On the upswing
The scent of something from long ago
Lingers in the air
Unidentifiable and undeniable
It takes you away to that timeless place
Those innocent days
Of cotton-candy daydreams and climbing trees
And racing against the sunset
For just five more minutes of freedom
Then comes the backswing
And you're thrust once again
Into an early thirty-something lifetime
Gravity takes hold
And tries to pull you down
And you fight against it in vain
For just five more minutes of freedom
