The 1000 Yard Stare Poem by Gerhardus Keen

The 1000 Yard Stare

Did you ever wonder
how much sorrow one can bear
like the war torn soldier
with the 1000 yard stare

lost good comrades
who became good friends
exploding grenades
young lives met their ends

shots fired amid darkness
sounds you don't want to hear
fumbling around for rifles
trying to get your mind clear

people think you are mentally unfit
but they cannot see
what is it the professionals call it
diagnosed with ptsd

it stays with you
the rest of your life
impairs your view
cuts you like a knife

did you ever wonder
how much sorrow one can bear
like the war torn soldier
with the 1000 yard stare
