The Australian Magpies Poem by Francis Duggan

The Australian Magpies

He sings in all Seasons and every day of the year
The song of the Aussie magpie so pleasant to hear
He was born to sing such a beautiful song
You hear him sing once you cannot get him wrong.

At their nesting time in late Winter and all through the Spring
The magpies at night i often heard sing
They sing at the borders of their patch of ground
On a calm moonlit night such a beautiful sound.

As much an Aussie as emu, kookaburra or roo
As lories or rosellas or black or white cockatoo
Even a famous football club honoured with their name
The Australian magpies are not strangers to fame.

These often seen birds in their famed black and white
In Parklands and gardens a familiar sight
They sing in all weather wind, rain and sunlight
Everyday of the year and sometimes at night.
