The Barnstaple Rumbler Poem by Charles M Moore

The Barnstaple Rumbler

Riding along on the Barnstaple Rumbler
going to town for the day
the platform conductor will shout all aboard
you almost feel like your going abroad
fromTorrington the folk will applaud
going to town for the day

Head for the coast on the Barnstaple Rumbler
pretty Weare Gifford displays
it looks like magic it sits in the vale
you think every trip is a fairy book tale
it makes a Constable look rather pale
going to town for the day

Over the bridge into Bideford town
the Rumbler stops on the way
the ticket inspector is sounding quite posh
as he says to some children 'come on now get off, '
They run away and we have a laugh
going to town for the day

On now to Instow a quaint little town
with Appledore over the way
the barriers down as we rumble on through
the people are waving and shouting' yoo hoo'
It's so exciting this little choo choo
going to town for the day

Off down the coast in the Barnstaple Rumbler
going to town for the day
Yelland and Fremington go past so fast
Bickington means that the journey wont last
we go round the bend with the Taw running past
going to town for the day

Slowing right down now the Barnstaple Rumbler
gets to the station with grace
this bright little puffer has done it again
I'm sure that it's much more than simply a train
and I just can't wait to go back home again
going to town for the day.
