The Basement Poem by Sana Olivia Hernandez

The Basement

It's dark in here.
In this cold basement.
I shiver and shake,
On the cold hard floor.
Is there escape?

Perhaps it is a nightmare?
Am I outside this damned room?
Have I already escaped?
Am I imagining my chains?

No.
It's real.
I can hear them,
The demons.
Chanting,
Yelling,
Whispering...
What?

Echoing.
It's echoing in my mind.
Painful reminders.
Regrets.
Suffering.

They whisper,
'There is no hope.'

'No hope? '
I question.

'You're here with us.'
They whisper.
'You ARE us...'

'I am ME.'
I argue.
'Can I leave? '
I dare ask.

'NO! '
They scream.

'You can't leave us! '
They plead.

'You can't escape! '
They yell.

'You're stuck here with us...'
'Forever.'
They assure...
Assure?

'You've suffered just as we have.'
They say sympathetically.

'You know there is comfort in this darkness.'

They whisper a cold welcome in my ear.
'Come, feel it with us.'

My thoughts,
My reason,
My sorrows...
Mix with theirs.
I know they are deceiving me...
But I no longer care.

I'm stuck aren't I?
Yes.
I'm stuck in this basement...
Forever.

But...
That's okay.
I'm no longer sane.
So I...
Surrender.

COMMENTS OF THE POEM

I'm curious: four actors have played Tom Ripley: Alain Delon, Dennis Hopper, John Malkovitch, Matt Damon. Which one did you see? Personally, I thought Matt Damon was the best... I think these demons are pathetic. They are the ones who are really scared, but they are manipulating the speaker. The key line for me is when they PLEAD with her to stay with them. They must need her ABOVE WORLD qualities to make up for their deficiencies. And they succeed in capturing her because she surrenders to them, instead of resisting further. If only she had held out longer, she might have escaped their grip. I have to check A WHISPER OF CHANGE now.
