The Burmese Generals

Pre-script: I've always said 'Thesious';
but for how we say Zeus
I'll accept 'Thesoose'.

Addict of murder and torture,
Procrustes,
of height average-to-tall*,
would invite people in
and stretch short ones to fit a long bed
and lop tall ones legs to fit a short.

* Theseus outwitted him,
tied him to a short bed
and cut off his head.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
20.3.21. He killed Damastes, surnamed Procrustes, by compelling him to make his own body fit his bed, as he had been wont to do with those of strangers. And he did this in imitation of Heracles. For that hero punished those who offered him violence in the manner in which they had plotted to serve him.[3]
