The Cherry Poem by Nassy Fesharaki

The Cherry

The Cherry

Went to buy ‘Feta Cheese'
-we have been raised with this
-means having breakfast
-with Sangak or Taftoon as bread,
-steaming fresh from Tanoor
-or oven; with the tea
-a mildly sweetened; delicious.

On counter saw fruits, vegetables
-delicate some of them, very rare
-I saw the sour cherry as very old friend

I must have blushed and changed colour
-memories with their heat in my veins,

Their trees grew wild by themselves
-no care and pampering was needed
-ripened fell and fed the rest of them

This is how, process:
-to eat them came along the insects
-some insects began fight with others
-the plot was Eden; for the birds as hunters
-cat and fox, carnivore came caught them
-their actions became a rosary of eat, feed,
-the dead joined the living defecate
-add it up with ours as children
-that fed seeds to become young twigs
-then forests with trees

Our mother, randomly and rarely
-heated seeds and cooled them
-bitterness would be gone
-they turned to medicine
-we used them as mom said
-to fight worms in tummies

Worms grew in us since
-we ate things ignoring to wash them
-our manner of eating was very special
-We loved it (all the kids): that I miss …
