The Dance Poem by Brittany Roper

The Dance

There is music all around
Glitter and costumes
Exhausted yet energetic instructors
And mixed emotions in every dancer
Over the intercom they announce you're next
The adrenaline rush of being on deck
Next to perform your dance
To express your feelings
To show off your talents
To every person awaiting your performance
Judges finish their critiques
Set aside the score of your opponent
And signal for you to start
Silence
The music begins
The lights so bright the audience disappears
All that's left is you
Your song
Your dance - is your gift to the world
To show your appreciation for all you have
Your talent
For you have rhythm
And you have found your place in the world
The music comes to a close
People cheer
You are reeled back into reality
Stepping off stage
Your heart beats rapidly
Not knowing what others thought of you
Then you realize
It doesn't matter
Because you are able to move
It was after all
Your dance.

A lovely poem, Brittany! I feel I learned something of what it's like to be a dancer, although I am not one. Your poem tells it well. I especially liked the line you are reeled back into reality. A unique description!
