The Dog Shadow - Poem by Braden Coucher

My uncle Mike’s dog
Shadow breathed loudly
And that old dying sound
shook the house with aching

Especially because he
And Jewels were falling apart
After 25 or 27 years of marriage.

He left
his dog Shadow blanketing the house
in forced breathing, staggering.

Jewels spoke to Mike.
He now lives with a 25 or 27
Year old “an admirer who
Finds him charming.”

This summer Shadow
Died and the sunlight
Comes in the windows.
I know Jewels will catch
Some of that light.
