The surging waves chase to and fro,
The reeds bend low where wild winds blow.
A lonely raft on waters vast,
Drifts through fate with no safe mast.
You know my story, sad but true,
And others know its hardship too.
I live my days with none beside,
No parents left to be my guide.
No wealth have I, no learned art,
No great renown to set apart.
A common man through storm and strife,
Just carrying on this fragile life.
I smile into the mirror bright,
And comfort my dear child each night.
Awaiting dawn and kinder days,
When she may know her mother's face.
I make her smile and dry her tears,
And fill her little heart with cheer.
When she grows graceful, strong, and wise,
The truth she'll surely realize.
