all the while
i just want you to be happy
and so i do all those things
which i think would make
you one,

but just the same i failed
you did not tell me
you did not even make a sound
even the slightest sound of
the sliding door
on that cold and lonely night

i failed and in my dreams you
were there until i wake up to find
no one beside me
no one in the house or in the garden

i talk to the sky and then it rains.
i stand on mud and i got stuck on this
earthly spot.
