The End Of Independence Poem by Oyetunji Toba

The End Of Independence

Rating: 5.0

Oh! Independence
On a soft October.
Born by the Sweat's from the noblemen of political flair,
When flag's of Green white Green flies up in the sky: then twas as bright shinny as the sun, and the yellow twilight at noon delight our souls.

Oh! Independence
On a soft October.
Born by the Sweat's from the noblemen of leading lights,
When flags of "Green white Green",trends the day long.
And our faces filled with shrieks of laughter, then little did we know.

Now we have to us, the rich seam of black minerals flowing from the East and South.
The beauty of nature at it peak, glowing from the West and North.

But now, may I ask
Where our independence might be.
When East hath ceased the breath of unity.
When North now the image of war and death.
When South no longer blew it peace.
Now "Awo" is gone and West without a leading light.

Oh! Independence
Where is our independence?
When we still depend yet bondage by the devilish powers and leader's that be.
And our prosperity flooded away by the act of a wicked heart.
Why hath independence come ending where it begun?

COMMENTS OF THE POEM
Chinedu Dike 10 December 2017

The end of colonial yoke marked the beginning of independence in Africa. But the hopeful assertion of self rule soon becomes the anticipation of a gaudy illusion, as the exit of foreign powers soon delivered the people into the grasps of democratic mobs. A poignant poem on the state of governance thought out Africa, with Nigeria as the focal point. Thanks for sharing Oyetunji.
