The Gods Have Spoken Poem by Paula Glynn

The Gods Have Spoken

This is the story
Of an innocent mortal chosen:
A mortal to become an iconic Greek God
His name was Samuel
And he studied the Greek scriptures
Learning everything about Greek mythology
He was even fluent in Greek although spoke good English.

Living in the much changed modern Greece
There wasn't much money to put food on the table
His parents had divorced when he was young
He was destined to be an only child
Happy to be without brothers and sisters
Getting by at school with complex subjects
Even though the smartest student there.

But Samuel made good grades
History his best subject
Along with fantasy novels in English language class
Especially ones about the ancient Greeks
And their array of powerful Gods
Not yet knowing they were real
And wanted his soul they couldn't steal.

Soon the dreams began:
Dreams of warriors battling monsters
From serpents travelling through tunnels
To terrifying fire breathing dragons
That only the brave of heart dare approach
To creatures of strange and otherworldly design
To have haunted the ancient world for a long time.

But time went on and these mythological creatures
Were lost like desert sand through fingers
Those Greek Gods all-powerful and all-knowing
Always at war with one another
Always cheating their lovers
By masquerading into other identities
Removing the mask leaving demons in wombs.

For ancient Greece did have its villains
The underworld a source of fear and obedience
Mortals knowing the Gods speak wise truth
The punishers in the underworld of Hades
Savage, vicious and bloody cruel
There no escape from their trap
The punishers of Hades creative with their torture.

But Samuel was from modern Greece
So wondered how could all this be true?
Yet it was and Samuel was given the gift of sight
He would face demons and bravely fight
The serpents and the three headed dogs
Would be his upper level job
The ancient Greek Gods showing him all of time.

Samuel living to a grand old age
Having taken his magical stories to the stage
Knowing he was the one chosen by the immortal gods
Knowing the Greek Gods welcome him into paradise
Beautiful beings walking and laughing in colourful robes
Sitting and talking in union telling stories
Watching over the beauty that is green and blue earth.
