The Great Call Of The Vikings Poem by Lamina Ifeoluwa

The Great Call Of The Vikings

Rating: 5.0

The great call of the Vikings
To be answered by Norsemen from the North
At a time of great purge and peril
An esteemed empire whose voice emphatically resounds
Odes of their victory and numerous exploits
The power of their savagery bites
Deeply as a bow stuck, death sighed
Far and near, the Northmen considered a threat
On foreign soil their presence despised

The powers of Thor and Odin they did invoke
As they ravaged and journeyed beyond far north
To the countries of Northumbria and Wessex to the South
Echoing sonnets of war upon each path they tread
As a viking was raid unto death
Day became night, allies turned foes, loyalties tested
Just as the quest for power stuck a blow interminably
An unforeseen betrayal came crashing like a storm
That wrecked their boats once more upon a foreign shore

Curse the gods, a young man felt
As he rallied foes and vanquished his countrymen
In the name of reputation and quest for fame
He just craved to dine in Valhalla
And bask in the tales of the Valkyries
His faith tested and so he passed
A devoted Christian he so much cherished
Made him live out his remaining days
In absolution and dedication to his faith
Not a faith, but a relative term in case

Battle cries stenched the air,
As many felt the power of the blade
Few left to revel in victory
As their longships changed course to steer home
Few were spared and taken slaves
To labour all through the remaining days
Spare not even the weak they always did
A trademark their ancestors go by
A Viking always fights till his last breath draws near
A lesson to be learnt, never trust a Viking
