The Iceberg Theory Poem by Ima Ryma

The Iceberg Theory

The iceberg theory theorized
By writer, Ernest Hemingway,
That what's in a story most prized
Should not be on surface display,
But should be hidden underneath
And omitted from easy sight.
That way the writer does bequeath
Gift to reader of shining light,
Evoking the feeling when read
Of finding the whole story, true,
On treasure hunt, the reader's led.
That's what Hemingway sought to do.

This theory Papa did surmise
Helped him to win the Nobel Prize.
