The Inner Voice Whispers To Me Poem by Mohammad Younus

The Inner Voice Whispers To Me

The inner voice whispers to me:
'You cannot endure in peace,
Tethered to falsehood.'

I severed ties long ago,
Cleansing it from my essence.
Yet it returns—
Cunning, disguised,
Wearing a multi-colored skirt,
A sparkly shirt,
Feigning friendship,
Its fractured gaze betraying intent.

Though I see its brokenness,
It shamelessly persists,
Alluring with hollow charms.

But my true self stands firm.
It will not bow,
Nor will it falter.

Angered, the false self rages,
Desperate to claim me again.
With steadfast resolve,
I refuse to yield.

Its snares will not hold me.
I break its bones,
Shattering its grasp forever.

And yet, I long for—
the cradle of my true self—
Safe and whole.
By the grace of God,
I am not weak.
I am free.
