The Isa Upanishad Poem by Rm. Shanmugam Chettiar

The Isa Upanishad

The Isa Upanishad has five parts.
It says God is the sole inhabitant
Of the universe and an integral part
of its every movement. The universe
belong to God and one should live doing
action without desiring their fruit.
The self is the sole inhabitant
Of the body as God is of the universe.
One must protect the Self from evil action
And overcome delusion and sorrow.
One must pursue dharma, artha, kama
And moksha as aim in one's household works.
One must practise karma yoga, which means
Doing works without desire for their fruit,
Rituals and spiritual to seek liberation.
The fifth part is of the departure of the soul.
To Pusan, Prajapati and Agni,
the seeker prays for the departing soul
To merge into the immortal breath
To remember all the good deeds it did
And to remove dirt in the body burnt.
