The Last Man On Earth Poem by D.N. Rebb

The Last Man On Earth

Reality kicks in, finally screams, ‘there's only me! '
Despair seizes that original thought ‘I feel so free'
Depressive psychosis establishes nagging worry
Is there a purpose to this unaccompanied journey?

Unbroken silence, always present, almost clairvoyant
Incapable to bring any kind of real enjoyment
Desperately searching for some wise option to redirect
Before losing vulnerable dignity and self-respect

Imagine being the proclaimed king of the universe
In your wildest dreams would you have self-confessed to this curse
Realizing the true pain when you are in no one's presence
An affectionate heart is the utmost human essence

This vain quest continues, leaving behind all things urban
Pursuing for fellow men shouldn't be such a burden
From strength of wars in history, we've learned to persevere
Though now all alone, man's only crusade, instinctive fear

Sanity, like neglected leaves left in the sun to sear
Philosophically questions how to move forward from here
Lost is naive faith that was once acknowledged in prayer
The god he then believed in, has, too, vanished everywhere

Since there's no one left to reflect to, his long search, hence, lolls
He often shouts out loud, but expects no timely response
Repressed memories cruelly replay on this weary trudge
‘Why me? ' he steadily bemoans with a harboring grudge

By a river, he contemplates a self-destructive search
While watching numerous sea hawks diving for yellow perch
Wishes he, too, could fly and join their prosperous voyage
Then admits this new life will always be an annoyance

Mother Nature aligns straightforward answers to follow
Like a library textbook, common courage then borrowed
Compulsive solitude in contemporary wasteland
He feels hopeless, thus, this is where he makes his final stand
