The Madness Continues Poem by Raymond Farrell

The Madness Continues

After World War two ended
Leaving 55 million dead
In its wake
All hoped peace
Would ensue
But ideological differences
Quickly divided the world
Into two camps
And those competing ideologies
Avoided a direct confrontation
By engaging in
Numerous proxy wars
Around the globe
Nuclear arsenals
Capable of annihilating all humanity
Hundreds of times over
Have been assembled
And these weapons
Continue to proliferate
And now
In the 21st century
Events are slowly unfolding
That point toward
A direct confrontation
Between the major powers
Terms such as
Limited nuclear war
Are being heard
As though such a phrase
Has any basis in reality
When it is completely
Unrealistic
To expect any
Nuclear exchange
To be anything
Short
Of the annihilation of humanity
Perhaps other species
If they could speak
Would express a desire
To see humanity exstinct
So they and the planet
Could flourish
But none would wish
Their own demise
For all the great benefits
Scientists claim evolution
Has wrought for humanity
It has all come
To this utter madness
The most sophisticated
Of all creatures
Seems unable to avoid
Self-annihilation
Perhaps the story
Of the great Homo Sapien
With its many shortcomings
Is more fiction
Than reality
And the science behind it
Is a ruse
With more unanswered questions
Than facts
Which are woven together
By numerous assumptions
To present
A fanciful tale
The underpinnings
May have a sound method
But the results
Have been
Misapplied and misinterpreted
To the benefit
Of a few
At the expense
Of the majority
Of humanity.

COMMENTS OF THE POEM
Kelly Kurt 13 August 2015

I almost fell over when I started to read this. My youngest son emailed me his senior thesis on Tuesday so I could proof read and edit. He is a history major and the subject of his paper is the political effects of the post war arms race. I did extensive research on the cold war, the Cuban missile crisis, MAD, NATO, proxy wars, communism etc. Your poem was a haunting reminder of all I read and made an impactful statement!

Well you above all can relate to what I am trying to say about the madness that has descended upon the world. You have far more knowledge about the particulars than I for sure Kelly
