The Marks Of A Good Patriot Poem by Francis Duggan

The Marks Of A Good Patriot

What are the marks of a good patriot why ask me I hardly would know
I never did fight in a war zone or have a war medal to show
That I am a very brave fellow courage I displayed under fire
But if that what it takes to be a good patriot to such I do never aspire.

I never was part of an army or the National flag proudly did wave
If someone with a gun try to shoot me I don't think that I would be brave
I never would have made a soldier of old age I would rather die
If you wish to know about patriots you ask someone other than I.

Some of my neighbours supposed to be good patriots in their front yard the National flag fly
At the top of a tall steel flag post it flaps to the winds of the sky
But most of them do not like migrants those who come from Lands over-seas
And most of them surely do not welcome the arrival of poor boat refugees.

So these my friends are what are known as patriots you make out of that what you may
On who should or should not live in their Country they are not shy to have their say
They visit the City war memorial and brave fellow Countrymen they recall
And they believe on a fair go for their own kind but not on a fair go for all.
