The Monsters In My Head Poem by Maham Shamsi

The Monsters In My Head

I'm no different than you
I sleep, I drink, I eat
I dance to the beat

But you don't see what I see
You can't hear what I hear

I want it to go, I want it to go away now,
The monsters you can't see
The monsters I hear every second of the day.
The monsters that make me go round and round
Tumbling me towards the ground.

I'm no different than you
I sleep, I drink, I eat
I dance to the beat
But you don't see what I see
You can't hear what I hear

My family thinks I'm crazy when I say
'What's that standing by the trampoline? '
'You're crazy, ' says, my sister
But she doesn't feel the pain, the agony I feel every day

The possible confusion I have separating the two worlds.
The sirens, the bangs, the calls
Watch me fall
As the two monsters laugh at what I do
I wish they'd go,
Go away and never look this way.

So before you go and dunk me in a toilet bowl,
Think about what I go through every night
Maybe help me get to the light
So that the madness ends
So the monsters in my head descend.
