That bowl of milk, the glowing font of light
Dear uncle moon crawls slow and fills the night
The twinkling stardust paves the silent way
While he, a sky-wide monarch, holds his sway
In silver beams that flood the midnight blue
He sails the air as kites are wont to do
Upon the fabric of the dark and deep
The full-moon vessel rides while mortals sleep
Just as the clock strikes three within the shade
He tilts toward the western marsh and glade
Against his breast he holds a shroud of white
In gentle league with breeze and river light
He pours his sweetest nectar on the stream
Until a necklace rises like a dream
His light is milk, maternal and divine That fills the heavens with a sacred sign
The moon ascends, and flowers wake and blow
And rivers, lakes, and oceans catch the glow
He brings an endless joy, a bounteous grace
Like silver grain spread o'er the quiet place
Though all the world should take what he can yield
His light remains unspent across the field
He spills cool shadows where the breezes sigh
And makes the night-wind chill as it goes by
O wandering uncle moon, so fair and free
You are the thirsting spirit's moon to me
Fly far away, a dove of blinding white—
Is heaven's dome your only home tonight?
The moon is poetry that walks the skies
With rhythm, tune, and grace before our eyes.
