by Emdad Shah
My life was once a barren track of sand
A stubborn void, unyielding and austere
Until within my heart's deserted land You came and lit a flame so bright and clear.
Upon the folded pages of the mind
Where wounds of wounded pride in shadows lay
A gentle rain of love is soft-designed
Like the fresh dawn of some unbroken day.
Sitting alone upon the azure shore Whence did you bring this beauty to my sight?
My restless heart was bird-like evermore
Yet in your sky's blue envelope tonight
I wrote my name and left it to your flight.
No familiar face was anywhere in view Yet you awoke a wild and wondrous bliss
Still wakes the hour within the haze of you
My soul is cooled by this sweet-hearted kiss
In smiles of light my weeping eyes are drowned
And every lonely sorrow has unbound.
Not merely moon, but silver waterfall Pouring upon the night a radiant grace
You brought a light to ancient darkness' pall
And pinned the stars upon the sky's embrace.
Within the quiet woods, a magic stream
Where weary stars sink deep in honeyed rest
A tremor wakes inside my broken dream
A sudden music stirs within my breast.
You are the distant friend beyond the skies
Drawing me onward to the gates of light
O take me to your calm and quiet eyes
And fold me in your silver stream tonight.
From icy peaks where cloud-crowned mountains soar
You pour the torrents of your shining grace
Down to the green earth's fertile
waiting floor
Where light and water dance in wild embrace.
Upon the farthest edge of heavenly seas
The sluice-gates open to the glowing tide
A swelling flood stirs in the morning breeze
Where sleeping earths in azure envelopes hide.
What magic wand of silver touched the clay
And made the common dust so softly gleam
The midnight silence melted quite away
And stirred to silver in the water's stream.
In the blue depths of heaven's lonely space
The moon awakes, a solitary spark, And where the shining waters leave their trace
A sudden flash is seen against the dark.
That stream of light, so luminous and sweet
Washes the dust and sorrow from the ground
And traces out where lonely heartbeats meet
A secret message without any sound.
From cloudy lakes upon the mountain height
You lead the silver waterfall along
You smile and make my shadowed spirit bright
And fill the universe with magic song You spill the silver, spill the laughing grace
And fill the thirsty soul with sacred dew
Not distant magic is this glowing face That bathes the quiet night in light of you.
In quiet nights you fall without a rest When did you come to touch my cottage door?
Your stream of light sweeps through my wandering breast
From what far shore comes down this music's pour?
The river of your beauty, ever fair
Flows deep into the valleys of my soul Until I lose my mortal being there
And in your endless beauty am made whole.
This is not merely moonlight from above
Pouring eternal down the mountain stair
An endless flood of unforgetting love Washing the dark earth clean of all despair.
In the blue deeps of heaven's starry dome
You woke a stream of honeyed, living grace
The quiet night looks on, and wanders home
And stars gaze sleepless at your shining face
Drawing aside the misty veil of cloud You came in silence, beautiful and deep
Your silver nectar fell upon the crowd And woke the dreaming earth from out its sleep.
Your smile, enchanted by the distant skies
Awakes a flute within my quiet breast The waking world in sudden wonder lies
As beauty flows to put unrest to rest
You are the silver waterfall that sings
Alone upon the mountain's stony frame
And every drop a sudden magic brings
To fan the heart into a golden flame.
In silent nights you spill a watery light
Like silver anklets tinkling through the trees
My shadowed spirit, weary of the fight
Drifts down the stream upon the midnight breeze.
In lonely skies the darkness weaves a shroud
Yet earth is cooled and cleansed by heavenly dew
The silver stream breaks through the heavy cloud
And night is born again, baptized in you.
O open eyes, and look upon the deep
What trickery is this across the blue?
Where the calm river holds the moon asleep
The silver waterfall comes breaking through.
Through opened doors of silence, soft and white
Who pours this honeyed nectar from above?
Into the ancient darkness of the night
