The Moyne River Poem by Francis Duggan

The Moyne River

Through flat coastal paddocks looking dry and brown
It slowly moves onward towards Port Fairy Town
Deep, dark and silent by night and by day
On towards Griffith Island it winds it's way

Long before human beings evolved to what they are today
The River now known as The Moyne towards the sea crawled it's way
Centuries before the first people to this Land now known as Australia came
It flowed to the sea a river without a name

The waterway that has inspired artists and the writers of song, story and rhyme
Was so very old even in the Dreamtime
Centuries ago on Summer evenings by the river in the shade of the trees
The Gundijtmara people had their corroborees

How old in time is the Moyne isthere anyone who would know
At Griffith Island in Port Fairy into the Pacific it does flow
People to life does come and does go
But time never becomes any waterway's foe

In flat and dry coastal paddocks that at most times look brown
It silently crawls on towards Port Fairy Town
On towards the Pacific by night and by day
With hardly a ripple on it's sea going way.
