The Pallet Poem by Alan Bilham

The Pallet

The pallet has many colours,
Like you & I,
Many shades like you & I
Many tones like you & I
Tones you can hear, but you don't want to,
Calling you names that hurt you,
Stabbing your heart with their racist tongue,
like the speed of a gun,
Their eyes pierce yours & enter your soul,
You feel their hatred to the core,
You don't want to be here no more,
They transmit their thoughts into your head,
Yes they wish you were dead,
How can you judge me by my colour,
You are a white bwoy they scream & hollar
Racists everywhere, people over there,
Stand & stare,
Every nation, every creed,
Racists chant, they feel the need,
Get to know the person inside,
Maybe it's time to change your mind,
It's not to late, to stop the hate,
Wouldn't you rather,
Believe we all came from one father,
Deep in the roots of the family tree,
Love is the answer, love is the key,
One love, brother, sister, mother & the father,
Wouldn't you rather.

Interesting how the same word has many meanings A pallet is one of those that needs defining. For a pallet can be nothing more Than the artist's painting board. But another that is of greater use Is the spread of a blanket for us On which to recline, sleep or whatever As we escape from the latest of life's endeavor. Or perhaps it's those study oaken boards That are used to carry massive loads That bring to the customers Products of various manufacturers. Now putting them all together One discovers that they all are brothers As one piles on (as in the oaken one) To bring something of need or value to someone, Then laying them carefully in place So that one can relax as a member of the human race Before one paints a picture of amazing colors To record that we all are under the skin, sister or brother. Such it is that a pallet serves many uses If we avoid making excuses. s
