The Refugee Poem by Mario, Lucien, Rene Odekerken

The Refugee

The night swallows the home I once knew,
walls turned to dust, streets to silence.
Footsteps fade behind me,
names become echoes in the wind.

The sea does not ask where I come from,
nor the road how far I must go.
I carry my past in the weight of my breath,
my future in the soles of my worn-out shoes.

Faces blur-some kind, some closed,
some look away, some hold out a hand.
I am neither here nor there,
only moving, only hoping,
only searching for a place
where the sky does not shatter with fire
