The River Changes Its Clothes Poem by Mark Heathcote

The River Changes Its Clothes

The river changes its clothes.
Day and night, night and day
A sequin dress in moonlight
A stream of sparkly glitter in daylight

A slithering thigh from hip to knee joint
From toe to ankle and leg calf
The river changes its clothes.
Its heels are its form from tap dance.

From Salsa to Ballet to Hip-Hop
From Ballroom to Jazz to Samba
To Sufi Whirling and Pasa Doble
The river changes its clothes.

Like a woman falling in and out of love,
Engagements, everything moving
Downstream moving boulders and rocks
And times poetry written from dreams.

Raging waters are all changing direction.
Side to side, Pasa Doble
Jazz to Samba but always
The river changes its clothes.

But always travels downstream.
Day and night, night and day
In a sequin dress in moonlight
Or a stream of sparkly glitter in daylight.

Moving from Ballroom to Ballet
To Samba, to Sufi Whirling and Hip-Hop
And at times never to be free
With engagements at times indivisible
From poetry and dreams and falling into your wide arms.
