The Sacred Trust Of The Neighbor Poem by Mohammad Younus

The Sacred Trust Of The Neighbor

O seeker of truth,
do you not hear the Prophet's call echoing through the ages,
a voice soft yet unyielding,
a reminder that faith is not confined to prayer mats or whispered supplications,
but lives in the way we treat those who dwell beside us?
'Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should not harm his neighbor.'
(Sahih al-Bukhari 5185,5186)

The walls that rise between our homes,
the streets that carve paths through our lives,
are not barriers to isolate us,
but bridges waiting to be crossed.
They are invitations to stretch out our hands,
to let kindness flow like a river,
mending the fractures that distance creates.
For what is a wall but a test of our willingness to reach beyond it?

O soul illuminated by the light of faith,
the Most Merciful has laid before you a map of compassion:
'Worship Allah and associate nothing with Him,
and show kindness to parents,
relatives, orphans, the needy,
the near neighbor, the distant neighbor,
the companion at your side...'
(Surat An-Nisa 4: 36)

Your neighbor's hunger is a mirror reflecting your own.
Their grief is a weight you are called to share.
When their lantern flickers in the dark,
do not turn away—
be the hand that steadies the flame.
When their voice trembles with need,
do not close your door—
be the sanctuary that answers their call.
For the Prophet (ﷺ) has declared with unwavering clarity:
'He is not a believer whose stomach is full while his neighbor goes hungry.'
(Sunan al-Kubra 19049)

O traveler upon the road of mercy,
let your tongue be a instrument of healing,
not a blade that wounds.
Let your hands be builders of trust,
not breakers of bonds.
For the Prophet (ﷺ) spoke with thunderous conviction:
'By Allah, he does not believe!
By Allah, he does not believe!
By Allah, he does not believe! '
And when they asked, 'Who, O Messenger of Allah? '
He replied,
'The one whose neighbor is not safe from his harm.'
(Sahih al-Bukhari 6016)

If you seek the nearness of the Divine,
then be near to those who share your world.
Let kindness be your compass,
gentleness your language,
mercy your legacy.
For in the heart of your neighbor,
in their joy and their sorrow,
in their need and their gratitude,
lies a door to Paradise.
Will you not knock?
Will you not enter?

O seeker of truth,
let love be the foundation of your home,
peace the air that fills its rooms,
and mercy the roof that shelters all who seek refuge beneath it.
For those who honor the sacred trust of their neighbors,
who guard their dignity and ease their burdens,
shall find their own homes rebuilt
in the gardens of eternity,
where the walls have crumbled,
and the streets are paved with light.
