The Sign Poem by Smoky Hoss

The sign says
BEWARE of GATORS.
The bird fishing
cannot read -
The gator
eyes barely above water,
moves in silence.
Closer, closer, ever closer,
the bird pays no mind -
Without provocation a tiny minnow
nibbles the birds foot.
Startled, the bird jumps, flying away.
The gator slowly sinks out of sight -
Isn't life strange at times,
the hunted saves the hunter
being hunted -
The real difference
between life and death,
is the mercy with which
they both take us -
