The Story Of The Tom Quad Mercury Fountain Poem by Alexander Thomas

The Story Of The Tom Quad Mercury Fountain

From a dream I was gestured to this sibylline pool,
By a shrouded figure to the flow of a creative renewal,
In the centre of illustrious spiritual and cultural history,
My revelation the source of an inspirational mystery.

The being beckons me over as I walk past on the lawn,
A small naked soul covered with blood as if new born,
I continue walking but my voice wants me to approach,
Awake I explore this vision or myself I would reproach.

In the green and fertile grounds of an ancient college,
This fountain is found in the home of Godly knowledge,
Into which artistic students are traditionally thrown,
From the murky water this root of enigma has grown.

In these magical waters a Koi Carp swims in time adrift,
From the the Empress of Japan a very valuable gift,
A statue of Mercury stands and under foot water streams,
The inventor of the lyre and carrier of souls & dreams.

Mercury rider of Pegasus and God of luck, travel and trade,
A messenger of Jupiter whose wisdom he has always obeyed,
Is it the Gods who sent these dreams I strive to understand?
To guide me in divine light of day by a destined hand?
