The Striated Thornbill Poem by Francis Duggan

The Striated Thornbill

He has a loud song for one of his size
But the wonders of Nature never cease to surprise
The striated thornbill searching for insects high on a gum tree
So tiny from the ground not easy to see
With brown back and wings and unders striped through the gray
Small birds I know of though I don't see every day
His shrill voice once heard one could never get wrong
The restless tiny fellow with the big bird song
Not known to be rare though their numbers seem few
Every day from Nature we do learn something new
At the start of his breeding Season five weeks from the Spring
Amongst the high branches as he fly he does sing
The rain clouds are gathering in the gray sky
In changeable weather typical for July.
