The Vultures Poem by The Poet Darkling

The Vultures

Under blue and rain-bowed skies
Bunnies frolic in the field
A stream trickles nearby
All of God's beauty revealed

She lay there, daydreaming
On Big Rock Candy Mountain
Random thoughts were swirling
Like water in a fountain

Repeating things he's said
All those memories flooding in
"I love you", "Marry me"…
His soft touch on her white skin

Her eyes drift with the clouds
Watching butterflies flutter
The pain of missing him
Cutting through her like butter

That's when she notices
Their black shadows on the ground
Vultures are closing in
Encroaching without a sound

Blocking out the sunshine
Erasing the days glory
Big Rock Candy Mountain
Now looks more like a quarry

Bunnies that were playing
Now lie dead as vulture food
Skies begin to darken
Vultures continually brood

The stench of death hovers
Loosing her demons once more
Paranoia grips her
While above the vultures soar

Her one chance at love gone
Her bridges burnt, her soul sold
Vultures circling over
Storms move in, the wind blows cold

Her tears now flow freely
Reality crashes in
Her heart cracks, her dream's gone
Punishment for her sin

Reaching in her pocket
Her hand fumbles for the knife
She takes it out and cuts
Her veins letting loose her life

The vultures have landed
And close ranks around her now
The sweet release of death
Wipes the sorrow from her brow

Vultures peck at their meal
Their sharp talons ripping flesh
In pain and misery
Does her dying body thresh

The vultures do their job
As they pick her body clean
Leaving nothing but bone
Then leaving the gruesome scene

There's no funeral for her
There are no loved ones to grieve
Both gone and forgotten
Her death's her love's reprieve
