The Winter Morning Clouds Poem by Cigeng Zhang

The Winter Morning Clouds

The first layer is a snowy water lily
The second layer is a dark blue sea
The third layer is a hive of silvery bee
The fourth layer is an Alexandrite Cat's Eye
The fifth layer is a beam of light
The bottom is a coast of golden sand
I get up from a bed at the bottommost
Looking at what to be there at my feet
And all in all surrounding by my side
Ah, the world around sparkles with joy

What a wonderful description of winter clouds! You present wonder upon wonder that makes up the larger wonder of clouds themselves. The first two layers - snowy white lily and dark blue sea - stunned me because I wasn't expecting them such amazing contrasts. Your whole description of the clouds layers is a celebration of the natural beauty and suggests everything is inter-related. The last line is a perfect closing as both writer and reader share in the universal joy. Morning from now on will glitter with loveliness for me!

After reading several of your mellow, bitter-sweet poems of the Autumn, I am heartened to read of the beauties of Winter. I wrote a poem this past season which begins: WINTER IS HARD, BUT NOT/WITHOUT ITS COLD DELIGHTS. I find a similar discovery of the positive things of winter in this poem, as you literally bring a winter cloud down to earth, down to your level through language. Each line is an metaphor that links one aspect of winter to something else we consider beautiful in itself. Winter is enhanced by being in this good company. It is no longer a harsh season destroying lovely things but is itself a lovely thing seen through eyes that can penetrate the surface ansd uncover the hidden truth of this season. The last line - THE WORLD AROUND SPARKLES WITH JOY - is the proof - This is the triumph of the imagination and language to create a new reality.
