There are couples
Who have walked together for years
Whose whole life has been a walk together-

Once I had that dream
Once there was the joy of romantic walking
And years later
There was such joy again-

Yet even as we walk together sometimes
The walking from beginning to end is not ours

Each walks most often alone
And even our walks together
Are not wholly that-

I walk alone
You walk alone
And we walk together
Together sometimes
Often still alone
