Three Wishes Poem by Melanie Emikohe

Three Wishes

Rating: 4.8

Your walls are weathering
When you laid your heart
On my greasy palms.
I'm euphoric
But my hands turn shaky
It's long overdue
Since our unassuming
Undignified exchange of pleasures
Started.
We have arrived to this point
Unexpectedly.

I'm fickle-minded
Flavored with four seasons
My heart is a spongy thing
You can't rest weights on it
And I'm terrified
More than you are
I'm a mess, falling in love
Not really my ambition.
I would hate to let your heart
Slip and splatter.

But in your eyes
There isn't anything else
To see but infinity
An understanding so deep
I missed it from the start.
I am uncertain, unprepared
I did not rehearse for this.
We were just runaways
At a playground
Chasing each other
Because it was delightful.

My three wishes
Is that I could love you as heavenly
I want to see you happy
From the folding
To the unfolding of the covers
I want to soften your gaze
Free the light
To unfold the joy
Confined, stranded in the unspoken.

Our restless hearts
Ran out of circles to run
Played enough, bone-tired
Pretended to fill
What's always been empty.
I ran into you
At the finish line
Where I crossed with you
Too many times before
But now, your hold
Is tighter, warmer.
