Tired of watching a caged bird,
Singing, squawking, beaking,
scratching with its claws,
Confined within the bars of its cage,
Refusing to spread its wings and flee—
For it has grown to love its cage.
It once soared freely through boundless skies,
But now it sings for the hand that feeds,
Chained by comfort, it forgets its open home,
A captive now to its elemental needs.
One feather red and one feather blue,
I wish to see it break away,
To leave behind this gilded tomb,
And find its home in the heaven's vault.
A free bird gliding is better,
So much wiser than the caged bird's song.
But when I look closely in the mirror,
I see that I, too, have lingered long.
Two fools we are in our chosen cages of illusion—
No longer must we take this cage for our free home,
Let me rise with the dawn, the chains undone.
Awakened, I must spread wings to the boundless sky,
With love for freedom, I must soar high
And not be a caged bird content with the cage.
