To A Night Bird Poem by Jean Mallette

To A Night Bird

Rating: 5.0

Sweet bird upon my window sill,
Thou art so like a dream to me-
Ye both are things I ne'er can feel
And yet the things I long to see.
Oh, standing there rejoicing sweetly
Whilst in the stillness of the morn,
As yon, the rising sun doth greet ye
To break the spell the night hath worn.
Thou winged angels of the heart;
Thou blessed messengers of night-
Sweet dreams and birds that soon depart
Into the shadows of daylight.
To shed a tempting ray of bliss
Upon the sleeping souls of men;
To plant a sweet, embracing kiss
Within the hearts of them and then
To fly away before the dawn
Is what ye both are known to do
Whilst all that's left aft' ye have gone
Are but the memories so few!
Sweet bird upon my window sill,
Thou art so like a dream to me,
For as mine arms do long to feel
That which my sleeping eyes can see,
So do they reach up toward the sky
To grasp thee 'fore ye fly away;
To catch thee 'fore the night must die,
To make thee last me all the day.
